Valentine’s Day: Origin Story + Gift Guide
The holiday of love is only a few weeks away! We associate Valentine’s Day with red roses, boxes of chocolate, and romantic gifts, but it wasn’t always this way. Like many modern holidays, February 14th has evolved over the centuries. Below we’ll be sharing the origins of Valentine’s Day as well as thoughtful gift ideas for your loved ones.
The History of Valentine’s Day
Named for the patron Saint Valentine, this holiday has a long and interesting history. Saint Valentine’s true identity is a mystery, but the most famous legend states that he was a Roman priest and a martyr of love. He secretly married couples after Emperor Claudius II banned marriage for young men, believing that single men would make better soldiers. Saint Valentine was executed after the emperor found out his secret, making the holiday we know today a commemoration of his life.
Some historians believe that Valentine’s Day is a Christianized version of the Roman fertility festival Lupercalia. One Lupercalia tradition involved bachelors being paired up with single women in hopes of finding a forever partner. Whatever origin story you believe, Valentine’s Day has always been linked to romance.
By the Middle Ages Valentine’s Day had transformed into an early version of the holiday we now celebrate. Men sent romantic handwritten Valentine’s greetings to the women they loved, and by the 18th century, these greetings were accompanied by tokens of affection that eventually turned into larger gifts like jewellery and sweet treats like chocolate and candy.
