Many of us neglect to consider if earrings will complement the shape of our faces when shopping. It may not seem like a big deal, but the right pair of earrings can really make a difference in your overall appearance. Certain shapes complement each other naturally, so it’s important to choose your earrings wisely! Whether you’re treating yourself or buying a gift for a loved one, learn how to find the best earrings to suit your needs.
How To Choose The Right Earrings For Your Face Shape
Firstly, you must figure out your face shape if you don’t already know what it is. It will be as easy as looking in the mirror for some people, but if you’re not quite sure, you can break out the tape measure. You’ll need to measure your forehead width, cheekbone width, jawline width, and face length.
There are 6 general face types: oval, round, square, heart-shaped, diamond, and rectangular. You can use your measurements or go by the descriptions to determine which group you belong to (and which earrings will look best on you) below.
Earrings for an oval face. Your face will be longer than wide, with your cheekbones being the widest part of your face. Those with oval faces often have tall foreheads and a softer jawline and/or chin.
Oval-faced women are lucky. Most earring styles look great on oval faces. The only styles that should be avoided are long tassels or drop earrings, as they can make your face look longer than it actually is. Medium-length styles shouldn’t be a problem, though!
Earrings for a round face. The length and width of your face will be roughly the same, and your cheekbones will be the widest point of your face. Round faces tend to have soft jawlines and foreheads that round at the hairline.
Look for earrings that will contrast with the round shape of your face. Drop, tassel, and chandelier earrings will elongate your face and create balance. Angular geometric earrings are also a great option. Avoid round or disc earrings like hoops, as they will only make your face look rounder.
Earrings for a square face. Like those with a round face, the length and width of your face will be close to equal. However, square faces will also have foreheads, cheekbones, and jawlines of a similar length. Those with square faces tend to have strong jawlines and straight hairlines.
The right earrings for those with square faces are also all about contrast. Round shapes will add a softness that other earring styles can’t compete with. Hoops or drop earrings with disc shapes are made for square faces. Square shapes, even small studs, will reinforce the strong lines of a square face.
Earrings for a rectangular face. A rectangular face is almost like a square face, with a strong jawline that shares similar lengths to the cheekbones and forehead. The difference is in the face length, which will be longer than the face width.
You’ll want to choose similar earrings to those with square faces. Any kind of rounded earring will be flattering as it will bring a softness to the face. Studs are also a good choice. Long and slim earrings should be avoided as they will elongate your face even further.
Earrings for a heart-shaped face. Your face will be slightly longer than it is wide. Your forehead and cheekbones will be roughly the same length, with a narrower jawline. Those with heart-shaped faces tend to have pointed chins and a widow’s peak.
Long drop earrings will be your best friends, especially styles that are rounded at the bottom. They will fill in space between your jawline and chin while softening the angles of your face and accentuating your cheekbones.
Earrings for a diamond face. A diamond face is similar to a heart-shaped face, featuring a pointed chin and cheekbones wider than your jawline. The difference is that diamond-shaped faces have narrower foreheads and an almost equal overall length and width.
Those with diamond-shaped faces will want to look for styles that counter the angles and length. Look for styles that add width rather than height and curves that will soften the angles. Small to medium hoops or rounded teardrop earrings are excellent choices.
