October Birthstones

October-born beauties get to enjoy two birthstones: iridescent opal and dazzling tourmaline. Though both of these precious gems have completely different types of sheen, they have one thing in common: they both share an incredibly wide range of colours. That’s why October babies are some of the luckiest when it comes to birthstone jewelry – they have one of the best selections!

Opal. These stunning gems are famous for their iridescent shine. They can contain several colours all at once in the most subtle yet hypnotizing way. Technically, an opal has all the gemstone colours in it! Because of this, it was highly valued in ancient times and has been known as the ‘Queen of Gems’. The Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful gemstone, the Greeks believed it gave owners protection from disease and the gift of prophecy, the Bedouins believed opals fell to earth during thunderstorms and contained lightning, and Europeans thought of the opal as a symbol of hope, truth, and purity. Every opal has its own unique colouring that changes with a simple turn. This makes it an excellent choice for jewelry, as every piece will be a one of a kind conversation starter.

Tourmaline. Meaning ‘mixed stone’, tourmaline comes in a very wide range of colours and combinations. Tourmaline can be found in everything from deep greens and blues to intense reds and cheerful yellows, making it the most colourful gemstone out there. Certain tourmalines can even home up to three colours in one stone! Besides its impressive colour range, tourmaline is valued for aiding creativity, insight and enlightenment, plus encouraging better sleep and overall calmness. Pink tourmaline is typically used as the October birthstone, but when the gemstone is available in pretty much every colour under the rainbow, it seems wrong to not take advantage of it. Whether your October-born friend or family member loves moody and dark colours or sweet pastels, there’s a tourmaline shade for her.

October is known for being one of the most colourful months of the year, and its two birthstones do an excellent job of reflecting it. Treat your October-born loved ones to some beautiful birthstone jewelry!
